So for my birthday this last week my sweet husband bought me a serger! Of course I am dreaming up all sorts of lovely things to make – tops, summery dresses, skirts… I think I am in for a bit of an adventure sewing some lovely summer clothes! :) Of course a serger also means I am going to have to try sewing with some knit & jersey fabrics – I see some summer tees for myself hopefully. Loving some of the inspiration on flickr for lovely handmade clothes…

1. easy summer dress, 2. oh, twirly skirt, 3. Seersucker Top, 4. T-shirt and pants for summer, 5. Black & White Tunic, 6. another new summer dress!, 7. Summer Frock, 8. Sleeveless Top, 9. Burda WOF tunic, or Pink Lemonade closeup
Now I just need to take a class on how to use my new serger (already scheduled) and I will be all set :) Any serger tips or advice for me (or funny serger stories)? I would love to hear it! :)
You lucky thing! I have no tips or advice, I have a loaner from a friend but in the ummm months I have had it I have never so much as put it on my desk let alone use it. They just look so intimidating!
Lucky dog! I’ve been ogling sergers for a while. I can’t wait to see what you make!
Thanks for all the inspiration! I have a serger and it intimidates me a bit. Every time I need to thread it, I take it up the street two blocks to the sewing machine repair shop and they have to thread it for me! I’m pathetic…
I love my serger – it is a pain to thread, but they are so easy to use.
Great picks! I had to go through and favorite almost everything! I’m kinda going through a painting spell, but feel a sewing spell coming up.
Just wanted to say congrats on the serger! I too, just bought one as well. I’ve made a pair of pajama pants from vintage pajamas successfully, and I think that’s a good place to start. Pretty easy too… just used some pj pants I like as a “pattern”.
Good luck! You have some very nice handmade clothing examples to shoot for! I’ll be keeping an eye on what you do … maybe you’ll inspire me to keep up!
Yay sergers!! I love working with sergers. I don’t yet own one, but I use them at work all the time. They are great once you get comfortable with them. Watch out for the blade though! You’ll lose a few fingernails. We make fleece hats at work using mostly sergers and you just have to experiment with the tension and stitch length so you don’t get wavy seams.
Congrats!
Maybe you have a new fancy self threading one but if not…NEVER unthread it! Always tie on. They will teach you that in class – such a time saver and headache preventer too.
