Fabric Wall Art – A Mini Tutorial

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I actually made these about 3 years ago. (Yes, you read that correctly…) I put these together when we lived in our apartment before we bought the house we live in now. I just never got around to hanging these on the wall (in either place) until about a month ago… Oh well! At least I finally hung them up, right! :)

These are really easy to make & a great way to switch out your artwork when you get bored! I used fabric, but you could also use scrapbooking paper (you just might have to get creative & tape or glue it instead of stapling).

To make your own fabric wall art you need -

  • Fabric
  • Several cheap painting canvases (you can get the really cheap ones, since you won’t be painting on these – I bought mine at dickblick)
  • A staple gun

I have also seen people use foam core, but personally I think the painting canvases will hold up better over the long run & look a little nicer wrapped…

1 – Anyways, cut your fabric to size. Be sure to cut enough to wrap it around the sides & the back. My canvases are 12″ square, so I believe I cut my fabric about 14″ square.

2 – Wrap & staple while pulling the fabric tight so that it doesn’t wrinkle. (It is best if you have two people for this step, one to staple & one to hold the fabric. Just be very careful of fingers & hands!)

Pretty easy! It doesn’t take a lot of fabric & the canvases are not very expensive, so it is a great art option (and I won’t feel guilty changing it out if I get tired of the fabric!).

Now you will feel no rain…

I think to explain this post, you probably need a little history :) Almost 7 years ago on a cold snowy day, I got married to my best friend & now husband – Ben. We wrote our own vows, but also had a poem read during our wedding. I have always wanted to do something with that poem & when I saw this artwork I was inspired to create this…It is a 16×20 canvas painted with acrylics. I actually used paint & a brush to write out the words, because I wanted the words to have a very raw look (the painting that inspired me is done differently, but still neat). I painted the background a very light pinkish/white. Eventually this is going to hang in our bedroom & I plan on painting the walls a light blue, so I think it will contrast nicely.

Oh & I thought I would share the poem (you might notice I left out the last couple lines, I thought it worked better in art form that way).

Now you will feel no rain
For each of you will be shelter
    To the other.
Now you will feel no cold
For each of you will be warmth
    To the other.
Now you will feel no loneliness
For each of you will be companionship
    To the other.
Now you are two persons
But there is only one life
    Between you.
Go now to your dwelling place
To enter into the days of your life
    Together.

This was really such an easy project, but I love the results since it is so special to us…

Just wanted to mention that the giveaway is still open, be sure to take a look at my last post for that :)

Afternoon Painting

I spent the other afternoon painting & sitting in the sun on our screened in porch…

Of course I had a little bit of company (the best kind)…

Painting details – Acrylics on an 8×10 canvas

I am definitely still learning & I think I need to get some better brushes, but I am totally having fun. I am just letting myself enjoy the process & not getting too caught up on how perfect my paintings are. Although I would love any advice on good brushes for painting with acrylics. If anyone else reading paints with acrylics, I would love to hear what others use & love for brushes…
